Im a drinker… i always wanted to know,when a liquor store says “wine and spirits” what the hell is spirits?
I asked my buddies and they are as clueless as me….. maybe to much hennessy….
All spirits are liquor but not all liquor are spirits.
A spirit must be at least 35% alcohol or 60 proof and is generally low in sugar. So Hennessy is a spirit, as is vodka, gin, tequila, brandy and even rum, (which is made from sugar cane and/or molasses.)
Things like Bailey’s, Kahlua, all schnapps from the US and other liquors with a higher sugar content and usually a much lower alcohol content still fall under the category of liquor, but are considered “liquers” and not spirits.
Typically younger drinkers will opt for the liquers, say like a Midori Sour which is only about 20% alcohol or 40 proof. So they would need to drink twice as much as you and your buddies who are drinking cognac, a spirit, which is 40-45% or 90 proof.
